SEO gunslingers and the Wild West

SEO almost has a feel like the wild wild west. Almost anything goes. Google is the sheriff. And, instead of gunslingers, SEO’s are title tag slingers, and link building slingers. Don’t like a competitor? Well, get an SEO to rustle their rankings or googlebowl them over. Bury them in the SERP’s. SEO’s are powerful. An SEO can wreak havoc on a competitors online reputation.

As fast as Google changes the algo. SEO’s figure out the algo. Same old story. Our rodeo is riding the bucking rankings. Our farm is a link farm. It’s not Cowboys & Indians, its White hat & Black hat. And, the site scrapers are the bank robbers. Yeeeha. Giddyup.

Getting Indexed By The Search Engines - The Fast Way And The Slow Way

Search Engine Optimization

Reprinted for SEO - search engine optimization services.

By Rebecca Prescott

The first step to getting any traffic on the internet is getting your site indexed by the search engines - specifically, the ‘Big 3′. - Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo. And there are two things you should forget about straight away.

Number One - Yes, you can submit your URL to the search engines using their online form. But be prepared to wait around for a long, long time if you’re relying on this to actually include your site in their databases. The search engines like to find your site through links on other sites, especially well ranking, established sites. With so many sites on the internet, this is their way of deciding if they should even think about adding your site to their index - never mind the question of ranking well in their index.

Number Two - If you see an ad or service offering to submit your site to 10,000 search engines and directories - run the other way. If you have money to burn, donate it to a charity or shelter instead. At least then it would have been spent on something worthwhile. Most of your traffic will come from google, yahoo, and Microsoft. Other search engines don’t represent any significant amount of traffic. You will actually get more traffic from link partners or people republishing your articles than these guys. It certainly won’t get your site indexed by those that count.

So how can you get your site indexed?

1. The Slow Way

* Reciprocal Linking

Reciprocal linking used to be more prominent amongst webmasters than it is now. It was once considered by the search engines as a good vote in favor of your site. The it got abused to the point that irrelevant results started to clog up the arteries of the search results. So these hypertensive algorithms were changed, and sites that relied too heavily on reciprocal linking lost a lot of their ranking and traffic. It can of course still provide a pathway for the search bots to find your new site. But exchanging links is time consuming and tedious. The links usually end up on a side page that exists solely for the purposes of link exchange. It doesn’t provide a very relevant and topical link, and is a really poor use of time.

Reciprocal linking hasn’t been consigned to history however. Some webmasters have so many links exchanged that together this constitutes a good flow of traffic. I do get traffic from my links. But I get more traffic from sites that have published my articles. Reciprocal linking is a big topic - ebooks have been written with chapters devoted to it. But suffice to say, in terms of getting your new site indexed, this takes a long time, and it doesn’t leverage your time.

2. The Quick Way

* Writing Articles

Writing articles for other webmasters and ezine publishers to reprint has many advantages, not least the traffic you receive from it. But it is very effective at getting sites indexed quickly, and getting new web pages indexed quickly. This is an excellent way to leverage your time, unlike reciprocal linking. One article can get you links for months and years to come. By including a link in the resource box at the end of the article, you not only get a very topical link to your site (assuming you wrote an article that was relevant to the page and site you are linking to), but you get interested visitors to your site. These visitors come from both the major article directories, and the sites that choose to publish your article.

How many people will republish your article depends very much on how topical your article is, how big the niche is, and of course, how good the article is. Writing fluff or rubbish will generally not serve you well. Few if anyone will republish it - assuming it is accepted by the article directories in the first place. And any visitors reading it will not be persuaded to click through to your site if you don’t provide good, relevant content. Article marketing is not just about getting a site indexed, or getting links from authority article directories. These benefits are actually a consequence rather than an object in and of themselves.

Write to inform, write to solve a problem, write to contribute to people’s understanding. Don’t write for the search bots.

* Google Sitemaps

Google sitemaps is a great tool to reduce the amount of time it takes to get the googlebot back to your site when you’ve added fresh content. The search engines love fresh content. And the special sitemap you set up with google lets their bots know when a site has been updated. Pre sitemaps, the googlebot would have its own estimated schedule of when your site might be updated. In those ‘old days’, it might take a month for googlebot to crawl new pages.

* Press Releases

Whilst the idea of sending a press release sounds daunting, there is a lot of free information out there to make the process easier. Press release have to be formatted a certain way, and they must be written from the point of view of news. But they are great ways to get good links if you pay to have them released to yahoo news and google news. These can become a good source of traffic too, if they are optimized correctly. And whilst many webmasters now use article marketing, fewer use press releases.

Getting your site indexed quickly is all about getting one way, authority links into your new site. The major article directories are considered authority sites, and of course, so is yahoo and google news. And submitting your article to a lot of smaller article directories increases your chances of getting those articles republished. Those directories provide links themselves, but also a way of reaching a wider audience of webmasters looking for content. And the niche directories provide very relevant - and hence valuable - incoming links.

How to Become a War Correspondent and Outscoop the Major Networks

Hi Family and Friends—

Want to become a war correspondent and outscoop the major networks? Go up north in Israel, look just about anywhere, and start taking pictures.

We noted that news sites on the Internet showed little but pictures of damage at and near military targets in Lebanon (and many of those pictures turned out to have been staged or Photoshopped). So the day after the “ceasefire”, Tamir, Coren and I drove up north to see for ourselves some of the pitifully under-reported destruction caused by the 3500+ powerful missiles that pounded civilian targets (a runaway world record – call the Guinness Record Book people) in Israel last month.

We were overwhelmed by the scope of the destruction and took about 150 pictures within a few hours, mostly in two neighborhoods, in Sfat and Kiryat Shmona. We photographed homes, streets, playgrounds, vehicles, schools, synagogues – destruction was extensive and not hard to find. (I selected four typical pictures below to send — they show a home, a car, a school, and a synagogue)

A man in Sfat invited us in to show us the legacy of the katushya that hit the thick reinforced-cement roof of his home:

Damage from Katusha rocket in Israel

Here’s one of many exploded vehicles we saw. The crater in the road from the katushya was a few meters away, yet the car was completely demolished. Note the holes in the roof from flying pieces of the exploded shell. Many of the cars we saw looked Swiss-cheese-like, riddled with holes from pieces in the shells that are designed to shoot out upon impact to increase harm to anybody or anything within a wide radius

Damage from Katusha rocket in Israel
Here’s a wall in a school (classes are supposed to start in three weeks…)

Like the car pictured above, this synagogue was several meters away from the crater of the missile that slammed into the ground, but it still suffered extensive interior and exterior damage:

These four pictures above that we have shared are just a small sample of those we took, and what we saw that afternoon is just a small sample of the widespread destruction in the north. We had planned to travel the next day to Metulla and Nahariya, and we probably should have, but the truth is that we are not professionals and we had witnessed enough –- we had sort of overdosed on seeing so many destroyed homes and depressing sights, and we just headed home.

While we photographed, we asked people if any news organizations had bothered to send people out to take pictures, and the answer was almost always “no,”  so we are sharing these pictures to enable you to see at least a little bit of the Israeli side of the story. You certainly have our permission to forward this to any parties that might be interested.

Laser Hair and Tattoo Removal

Laser Hair Removal
The word laser brings to mind images of science fiction spaceship fights, and other futuristic harmful uses. Lasers, however, are much more frequently used to help people rather than to harm them. The use of lasers in beauty treatments is a relatively new development, but their precise targeting and many different levels of strength make lasers an ideal tool in cosmetic procedures.

One of the first ways that lasers were used in beauty treatments was in laser hair removal. Performed even more frequently today. The laser is aimed at your skin and is pulsed at a point of dark pigment (the hair itself), which is meant to cause a thermal charge which destroys the hair follicle at the end of the hair. This causes the existing hair to fall out and also kills the hair follicle so that future hair cannot grow. Generally, light skinned individuals with dark hair tend to have the best results from laser hair removal, and the process is not as effective on blond, red or gray hair. If the laser hair removal is not done correctly, however, it can cause burns and other unwanted skin problems.

Lasers can also be used to remove unwanted skin decorations, as in tattoo removal. Tattoos have become more and more popular over the last few years, and people are also becoming more concerned with removing tattoos that were done in their youth. Laser tattoo removal is a process where a laser is aimed at the dark ink in the layers of your skin. The laser literally burns away this dark ink via a chemical reaction, causing the tattoo to disappear over several treatments. Tattoo removal generally works best on professional tattoos that were performed with dark colors of ink,

Lasers help doctors and cosmeticians everyday in their quest to make their patients look better. There are many other medical and scientific uses of lasers – but the cosmetic industry definitely owes a big thank you to this technology.

Laser Hair Removal - The Facts (part 1)

It seems like everyone is talking about laser hair removal. There have been plenty of claims about this procedure, in particular that it’s extremely effective at removing hair permanently. However, this is a generalization, and if there’s one thing that’s certain about laser hair removal, it’s that every person is different! Every person will respond differently to the laser hair removal process.

In fact, it’s important to start by determining whether or not you’re a good candidate for laser hair removal. You can be cynical and think that all that’s required is to be able to afford the multiple treatments. After all, laser hair removal sessions cost around $500 on average, and you can usually expect to have up to four treatments.

But financial resources aren’t the only thing you need to consider. In fact, your pigment is even more important. It’s pigment that gives color to your skin and hair. The fact is, laser hair removal is effective when the color of the hair is darker than the skin surrounding it. So, if you have dark, coarse body hair, with light skin, chances are laser hair removal will be very effective for you. If, however, you have very fair hair and dark or tanned skin, it may be a waste of your money.

The pigment that gives hair its color is called melanin. Melanin surrounds the structure inside the hair follicle that is responsible for germinating hair. The melanin needs to absorb the energy produced by the laser, which also generates a considerable amount of heat. Once enough laser energy is absorbed to destroy the melanin, the hair germination structure is left unprotected. This means that the heat generated will then damage the structure - and that means that future hair growth from that follicle is stopped.

Dark or tanned skin contains lots of melanin, and that means that a lot of the laser energy will be absorbed into the surrounding skin, not into the melanin inside the hair follicle. The more the skin absorbs the laser energy, the less effective the laser hair removal process becomes. One way to minimize the amount of laser energy absorbed by the skin it to use cold compresses to keep the affected area cool during the hair removal process. This will help the laser to bypass the colder skin and give it a better chance of reaching the melanin in the hair follicle.

Another way to keep the skin cool is to use multi pulsing laser technology, which is a fairly recent development. In this process, the laser energy is interrupted or pulsed, rather than streamed. Because of this, the laser delivers less heat each time, so the skin keeps cool and is better protected. There are also other types of lasers available, including: Diode, which is generally used on darker skin; Ruby, which has red laser beams capable of targeting melanin; Alexandrite, which is a long pulse laser; and Q-Switched Nd:YAG, which produces two different wavelengths to work on hair follicles that are both deep and close to the surface.

Acne

Acne is a skin condition that can either be mild and self limiting or chronic and almost disfiguring.The main goal of treating acne is actually to heal lesions, stop new ones from forming, prevent scarring, and lessen the psychological impact and embarrassment caused.

There are many products available for treating acne. Some of them possess clinically proven results and are prescription only. However, of a massive number of acne treatments available on the market today, certain combinations of these treatments are considered to prevent acne in all but the most severe cases.

One of the principal approaches for treating acne is to eliminate bacteria that are in the blocked follicles, or opening pores again with preparations known as peeling agents. Acne-causing bacteria can be successfully treated by antibiotics like the tetracycline medications such as minocycline for example.

Prescription Medication For Acne Treatment

It can be effective at high doses for very severe acne, or at low doses for less severe acne, in reducing the symptoms of this skin condition. With the introduction of tetracycline acne, several tetracyclines and their derivatives such as doxycycline and minocycline are now being used. It is only able to suppress the symptoms and, the tetracycline acne treatment is often a long term procedure that it may take months to get a flare up under control.

Drug treatment must not be taken by those pregnant women and nursing mothers. The main reason for this is due to the fact that tetracycline type drugs can stain teeth permanently and inhibit growth of bone, thus leading to certain skeletal effects in a fetus. Tetracycline drugs are not recommended for those who are under twelve, for similar reasons. Erythromycin can be used as an alternative.

A number of potential unfavorable side effects are noted.These side effects basically involve skin rash , serious gastric intestinal problems, headaches to name a few.Women become prone to thrush during the period of the treatment.

Or by treating the affected areas externally with bactericidal agents such as benzoyl peroxide. Or a dual combination of acne antibiotics and skin creams. However, treating acne with these kinds of treatments will actually not do anything to reduce the oil secretion of that is the primary root of the blocked follicles. Treating acne with these approaches will allow the skin condition to recur when therapy has ceased.

Another means of treating acne can be done by way of reducing the secretion of oils from the sebaceous glands. According to certain researches, this can be achieved by a great daily intake of certain derivatives of vitamin A like the isotretinoin over a period of a few months. Treating acne with isotretinoin is said to alleviate the symptoms of acne as this drug is proven to have a much longer effect than treating acne with antibacterial treatments.

Prescribing this drug requires a close medical examination since the treatment has a number of known side effects. Women are advised to such effective methods of contraception such as the birth control pill as it can harm unborn children.

Acne can be treated by means of exfoliating the skin. There are numerous topical treatments for acne are now available. One of the common examples of topical treatment is the use of salicylic acid. Treating acne with salicylic acid will allow the skin to peel off, which then helps to prevent the accumulation of dead skin cells combining with skin oil to block pores. Treating acne with this kind of solution helps to unblock the clogged pores, preventing bacteria from building up.
